Leaks Suggest Huawei May Launch the World’s First “Triple-Foldable” Phone with an Inner + Outer Fold and Dual Hinge Design

Recent online leaks from various bloggers indicate that Huawei is developing the world’s first “triple-foldable” phone, featuring an inner + outer fold and dual hinge design. The screen size when fully unfolded is estimated to be around 10-12 inches, incorporating a number of “Huawei’s cutting-edge new technologies” that will not have immediate competitors.

According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration’s (CNIPA) patent publication announcements, Huawei revealed a “foldable device” patent this March that features a triple-fold design. The patent was applied for on February 21, 2023, by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

The patent abstract is as follows:

  • This application provides a foldable screen device, including a first housing, a second housing, a third housing, a first hinge, a second hinge, and a flexible screen;
  • The opposite ends of the first hinge are connected to the first housing and the second housing, respectively, and the opposite ends of the second hinge are connected to the second housing and the third housing, respectively, with the flexible screen connected to the first housing, the second housing, and the third housing;
  • The first hinge is capable of deforming, allowing the first housing to fold or unfold relative to the second housing,
  • The second hinge is capable of deforming, allowing the second housing to fold or unfold relative to the third housing;
  • The thickness of the third housing is greater than the thickness of the first housing and/or the second housing, and the thickness of the first housing is different from the thickness of the second housing.
  • The multiple housings can be of unequal thickness, reducing the thickness of the device in the folded state and making it lighter, thereby providing users with a better grip.
